The CRM Automations Most D2C Brands Are Missing
Welcome series and abandoned cart flows are table stakes now. The automations that actually move retention live one layer deeper, and most CRM setups never get built out that far.

Ask most D2C brands what's automated in their CRM and you'll hear the same four flows: welcome series, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase thank-you. All useful, all standard, and all covering maybe 20% of what a CRM can actually do once real customer data is behind it.
Predicted repurchase windows
Instead of a flat “30 days after purchase” reminder, model the actual repurchase window per product — a skincare serum and a protein supplement don't run out at the same rate, and neither does the same product for a light user versus a heavy one. The reminder that lands three days before the product actually runs out converts multiples better than one that lands on a fixed calendar date.
Churn-risk intervention, before churn
Most win-back flows trigger after a customer has already gone quiet for 60-90 days — by then, they've often already switched to a competitor. A model that flags rising churn risk from early signals (slower repeat rate, lower email engagement, smaller basket size) can trigger an intervention while the relationship is still warm.
Value-based segmentation, not just RFM
Recency-frequency-monetary segmentation is a good start but treats every high-spender the same. Segmenting by predicted lifetime value lets a brand protect its actual best customers with different service levels, different offers, and different urgency — instead of treating a one-time big spender the same as a loyal repeat buyer.
- Product-specific repurchase timing, not a single flat reminder window
- Early churn-risk scoring that triggers before the customer has gone fully quiet
- Segmentation by predicted LTV, layered on top of standard RFM
The CRM isn't under-used because it lacks features. It's under-used because nobody fed it the data those features need.
