How Answer Engines Are Rewriting the Top of the Funnel
A growing share of research now happens inside a chat window, with no click, no visit, and no session in your analytics. If your funnel starts at the website visit, you're missing where the decision actually gets made.

The classic funnel starts with a visit: someone lands on the site, and everything from there gets measured. That model assumes the research phase happens somewhere Google Analytics can see it. Increasingly, it doesn't — it happens inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, or an AI overview, and the buyer arrives already decided, or doesn't arrive at all.
What actually changed
Someone comparing options in your category can now get a synthesized answer — three recommended brands, a short reason for each — without visiting a single website. If you're not one of the three, you were never in the consideration set, and there's no bounce, no impression, no session to show it happened.
Why this is invisible in your current reporting
Standard analytics only counts what reaches your site. A brand that gets recommended by name in an AI answer, and then gets a branded search or direct visit, shows up as “direct traffic” — with zero credit given to the recommendation that actually drove it.
- Run your real buyer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI mode manually — see who gets recommended and why
- Watch for a rise in branded search and direct traffic with no matching campaign — that's often the tell
- Structure content so a model can cite it cleanly: clear claims, clear sourcing, clear attribution
The funnel didn't get shorter. A whole stage of it just went somewhere your dashboard can't see.
This isn't a reason to panic about SEO — it's a reason to widen what “search visibility” means, and start measuring a channel that's already influencing revenue whether you track it or not.
